Three Scientists Who Got Stuck in One Box
The final part of Robert Sapolsky's 2024 introduction lecture. What happened when John Watson, Egas Moniz, and Konrad Lorenz each tried to explain all of behavior from a single discipline, and how this course avoids their mistake.
Genes, hormones, childhood, culture, evolution: every layer behind a single decision connects to every other layer. Believing in that connection sounds obvious once you see it laid out. History shows it is not obvious at all, and getting it wrong has done real damage.
When One Box Explains Everything
John Watson helped start a field of psychology built on the idea that reward and punishment shape behavior. He once wrote: "Give me a dozen healthy infants... and I'll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select, doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant chief, and yes, even beggar man, thief, regardless of his talents, tendencies, abilities, and race of his ancestors." Reward and punishment really do shape behavior. But Watson took one real, true idea and treated it as the whole answer, as if genes and family history played no part at all.
Egas Moniz, a doctor from Portugal, wrote that mental illness came from problems in the tiny connections between brain cells, and that doctors needed to "force thought into different channels." That was not just a way of speaking. Moniz won a Nobel Prize for inventing the lobotomy, a surgery that used a sharp tool to cut into a person's brain, because he believed every mental illness could be fixed by changing brain structure alone.
Konrad Lorenz is the darkest case of all. He is remembered fondly today for his studies of baby ducks that followed him around like he was their mother. He was also a scientist who spread messages for Hitler, writing about people he called "inferior" and arguing that the state should get rid of them. He helped decide which prisoners of war were killed, based on how "racially pure" he judged them to be, and he never said sorry before he died.
None of these three were small, unimportant scientists. They were among the most famous scientists of their century. Their certainty that one single idea could explain everything shaped school systems, excused permanent damage done to people's brains, and helped give cover to mass killing. Easy, one-cause answers for behavior do not just get the science wrong. They hand a dangerous tool to anyone looking for an excuse.
How the Rest of the Course Works
Avoiding that trap is the plan for everything ahead. The first stretch moves quickly through the basics: a few days each on evolution, genetics, animal behavior, and hormones.
After that, the same ideas get applied to real behaviors: love, raising children, sex, aggression, working together, language, and illnesses like schizophrenia and depression. For each one, the same two questions get asked. First, what does this behavior actually look like up close, since a close look often holds surprises? Second, why does it happen, traced backward through the same timeline every time, from a split second in the brain all the way to millions of years of evolution.
Three Ways Humans Compare to Other Animals
Three patterns keep showing up when you compare human behavior to the rest of the animal world:
- Same as animals: we do exactly what other species do.
- Same tools, new target: we use the same body parts and instincts as other animals, but pointed at something brand new.
- No match at all: we do things no other animal does at all.
The first pattern shows up in something as simple as a face. People find even, balanced faces more attractive, a finding that has held up for over a hundred years, probably because sickness and injury tend to make a face uneven. This is not just a human thing. Monkeys, given a choice, look longer at more even monkey faces. Fish prefer even fish faces too.
The second pattern is where things get strange: the same old instincts, pointed at something new. A soldier hunting one specific enemy, finally getting the chance to strike, will show a racing heart, fast breathing, and a flood of stress chemicals, almost exactly like a wild animal that has just fought off a rival. Except this soldier might be sitting in a cool, quiet room on a base in Nevada, flying a drone at a target on the other side of the world.
Drone operators, it turns out, carry real emotional scars from this work, a discovery nobody expected, since there is no physical danger to their own body at all. Part of it seems to come from the whiplash of the job itself: trying to end a stranger's life on the other side of the planet all day, then picking up the dry cleaning on the way home, then holding your own children that same evening. The body's ancient response to a fight still switches on, even when the "fight" is a screen and a joystick.
Where We Have No Match At All
The third pattern is behavior that no other animal has any version of. The example looks almost boring on the surface. A couple comes home from work, talks, eats dinner, talks more, goes to bed, has sex, talks again, falls asleep. The next day, the same thing happens. And the day after that, and the day after that, for thirty days straight.
No other animal does this. Almost nothing in nature has sex this often just for pleasure, and nothing else on the planet talks about it afterward, checking in, asking how it went. Human sexual behavior, alongside human language, belongs to this third group: not a version of something animals already do, but something genuinely new.
That gives this whole subject its shape. Understanding human behavior means refusing to sort its causes into neat, competing boxes, and sitting instead with how they truly work together. Some of what is coming will show we are no different from any other animal. Some will show old instincts pointed at new goals. Some will show behavior with no match anywhere else in nature. Holding all three at once, without squashing them into one easy story, is the task ahead.
